How to Play Poker Basic Rules and Strategies

A group of Texan gamblers and card players introduced the game to the casinos, and it quickly caught on. In cases where a player’s made hand has fewer than five cards, such as two pair or three of a kind, the highest available dealt cards are used to complete the 5 card hand. A hand starts with each player being dealt 2 cards facedown, known as hole cards. This is the case in most poker games and is done to reduce the chances of someone cheating by following marked cards.

A single pair will often take down a pot in Texas hold’em, so being dealt a pair preflop can be good news. Weaker premium hands such as A-Q offsuit or Ax,Jx are still strong, but not as strong as those above. You’ll generally want to play these from most positions at the table. Sometimes the situation will be right to play any hand aggressively, given the right conditions. If that % figure is higher than the % figure you have to improve your hand, it’s generally not a good call; if the figure is lower, it is. Now you know how to work out your odds of improving, you can use knowledge of pot odds to figure out whether it is worth calling a bet.

Now there are 5 cards in the middle which anyone may use (the 2 hole cards they alone can see and use) to create their best 5-card poker hand. A final communal card is dealt for all players to see and use. These are their ‘hole cards’, and only they can use them to make their best poker hand.
